Ramblings on a Smackdown

We were lunching at Amada – Keith and I – hoping to woo Eric Arnold with our Wine School ways. We wanted him to want us.
“I still don’t know what horrible and wicked thing passed between Eric and Keith”
Specifically, we wanted to turn him on to the idea of participating in a Smackdown against Keith. After all, he is a very respected editor at an popular wine magazine and the author of the wonderful book First Big Crush.
It was going well enough, I thought, to leave Keith alone with Eric and I excused myself to the Ladies Room. It was painfully obvious, upon my return, that in the short amount of time that I was away something had happened. Something unspeakable.
“Something had happened. Something unspeakable.”
The boys were shifty, and, like two miscreants in the schoolyard, they rather quickly – and rather obviously – became quiet when I approached the table. A conspiratorial look passed between them. And that’s when I knew.
I had left the boys alone too long.
I still don’t know what horrible and wicked thing passed between Eric and Keith on that blustery day. Nor do I desire to know. It has been confirmed by sources that it was, indeed, very nasty business. But that is neither here nor there.
“Will Keith deliver to Eric Arnold his Second Big Crush?”
In the end, I was able to rein these boys in and secure a very exciting March Sommelier Smackdown. It all happens Wednesday, March 19th. Two great wine lovers possessing two very wicked minds will meet to see who can really do that thing.
Eric is an all-around pretty nice guy (and, apparently, possesses a very filthy mind – or does it possess him?). Keith – as you know – is our fearless leader, founder of our blessed school, and an all-around decent guy (with, sadly, a very low-brow and bawdy sensibility).
Better still, we are throwing in books. Well, for a little extra. For an extra $15.00, we will have signed copies available for you, and we will force Eric to stick around to personalize said books. Keith will most likely be brandishing a sharpie. Hm…. So come one, come all. Because this Smackdown, well, it just smacks of a rollicking good time. And this is sure to be a night that none of us will soon forget.
Who, like me, isn’t the least bit curious: will this be a blow to our very own Keith Wallace or will Keith deliver to Eric Arnold his Second Big Crush?
