The Top Ten Wines for Mother’s Day

wine classMother’s day is one of the best time to open a bottle of wine. The nights are warming up, but–at least here in the good state of Pennsylvania–there is still just enough of a chill to warrant a few glasses of good wine.

These wines will make great gifts and will be enjoyable by a wide range of wine enthusiasts, including -I hope- your mom. Make sure to bring a corkscrew, just in case she wants to share.

You can find these wines using the Wine Finder. If you live near Philly, a Wine School Gift Certificate is a great gift.

Gloria Ferrer Sonoma Brut, Sonoma $8-12
A half bottle of this is perfect for Mother’s Day. A creamy sparkler with ginger and apricot notes and round apple crisp flavors on the finish.

Marques De Gelida 2002 Cava Brut
(Spain) $9-13
A great value sparkler in an overly flamboyant package. However, this is a fantastic bubbly for less than $15. Fresh & nutty with bubbles tiny enough to give your tongue acupuncture.

Domaine Le Fruitiere 2005 Muscadet, Loire (France) $7-11
Everyone should be drinking Muscadet at this time of year, especially your mum. Bright & round with a dash of hazelnut and herbs. Very satisfying with raw oysters on a warm spring evening.

Valley of the Moon 2005 Pinot Blanc, Sonoma $10-$14.
A glassful of mango and cream. A lush and fun white.

Beringer 2004 Private Reserve Chardonnay, Napa Valley $25- 35
The greatest wine of in the genre of the American mondo-chardonnay. A gargantuan concoction of toasted almond, vanilla cream, and apricot. Nothing comes close.

Aile D’argent 2003 Pauillac, Bordeaux (France) $50-65
No sane person spends this much on a white Bordeaux, but I did. One of the most exciting wines I have tasted in a long time. Nougat, granite, and tarragon interplay through dense layers of glycerin and acidity. Your mom will love it until you tell her how much it costs.

Fra Guerau 2005 Rosato, Monstant (Spain) $8-12
Dry rosés are a wonderful choice for Mothers day gift. Flavors of wild strawberries and fresh plums are backed up by a dose of racy acidity. A fun wine.

Green Point 2004 Shiraz, Victoria (Australia) $10-$20
There is a wide price range for this wine, with the greatest value being in Pennsylvania. A peppery nose is followed by ripe blackberry and cola flavors. A long finish dips toward blueberry and spice.

Inniskillin 2005 Pearl Vidal Icewine
, Niagara (Canada) $30 -$60
A lovely dessert wine with a bouquet of exotic fruit and a racy and somewhat athletic structure. A perfect match for Sainte-Maure cheese.

Casa Emma 2004 Chianti Classico
(Italy) $12-16
A classic chianti that harkens back to the days when Mom was a young lass. Dry leather and cherry on the nose, with a loam and sun-ripened cherry on the palate.
