Alvear “Solera 1927” Pedro Ximénez

This is a serious P.X. for a song–less than $20 for a 350ml bottle. A profound nose of dried apricots and figs leads to a mid-palate of rich, almost haunting notes of similarly dried fruits and hazelnuts. The texture is as velvety as can be and the sweetness is definitely on the far end of the sugar spectrum, but at no point does it become cloying or overwhelming. This is as perfect a partner for a high-end cigar–or a bowl of vanilla ice cream–as you’re likely to find.
